Jim RomeThe commissioner appeared on Jim Rome’s radio show on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder. During the interview, Rome asked Stern if the Lottery was fixed.

Jim Rome was just doing his job when David Stern, the NBA Commissioner, exploded asking Jim Rome “Have you stopped beating your wife yet?”

“Shame on you for asking, you did that for a cheap thrill.” said David Stern.

There was even a point where Stern muttered the saying and then said it once again to make sure we heard it.

Stern accused Rome of being a baby and stated he has someone more important to talk to next, Stephen A. Smith who was up next on his schedule.

How many of us rushed to Google to search if Jim Rome has ever been arrested or accused of domestic abuse, but for many of us that did…there is nothing.

The saying Stern was using, was made famous in 1828 during a presidential campaign per ESPN1100.

The commissioner was trying to say it was unfair to ask such  loaded question but the way that he went about it has some up in arms.

For many out there, they will assume that Rome has beat his wife.

The “beat your wife” thing is a standard example of the definition of a loaded question. From Wikipedia,

The traditional example is the question “Have you stopped beating your wife?” Whether the respondent answers yes or no, he will admit to having a wife, and having beaten her at some time in the past. Thus, these facts are presupposed by the question, and in this case an entrapment, because it narrows the respondent to a single answer, and the fallacy of many questions has been committed.

Regardless of what it means it’s hard to imagine someone asking you such a question that is completely out of context.
