Notre Dame: College football recruiting 2012

Notre DameThings have not been easy for Brian Kelly and the Notre Dame football program as of late. After a tussle with a teammate that led to the departure of Aaron Lynch, the losses continued to build as they also lost Tee Shepherd. Shepherd was their best cornerback recruit from the 2012 class and left under unexplained conditions only eight weeks after he enrolled. Deontay Greenberry, one of the top ranked receivers and Shepherd’s cousin, decided to stay away on signing say and enrolled at Houston. Ronald Darby, another top corner, left the Irish in January and went to Florida State and David Perkins, a top running back committed and then decommitted. He plays for Ohio State now.

While some of these moves are common when it comes to 18 and 19 year-old kids it does make you wonder if there is more to the story. What is it that these highly touted recruits don’t like?

Despite the movement, Notre Dame still finished with one of the top recruiting classes. Ranked No. 9 from they still feature stand out players such as; Gunner Kiel, Devante Neil and Justin Ferguson.

Quarterback Gunner Kiel from Columbus East High School in Indiana is one of the stronger-armed pocket passers this class has to offer and he is a deceptively good athlete. This offense surprisingly features him as a runner more than you might think and he is up to the task with both power and speed to fall forward, states

The talk will quickly become who will be the starting quarterback for the Irish and Kiel could be an option, even as only a freshman.

Kiel was’s No. 1 quarterback recruit for 2012 and there is no doubting that Notre Dame can use a quarterback that can see the entire field to take advantage of Brian Kelly’s spread offense.
